The Stute

The Social Institute was founded at the end of the 19th century to cater for the social needs of the young men of Earl Shilton.
Reconstituted in 1977 as a charity, it now serves as a social centre for the whole village and the surrounding area.

The Institute is located just inside Station Rd in the centre of the village of Earl Shilton. The village is located in Leicestershire on the A47, 10 miles south west of Leicester and 5 miles north east of Hinckley.

The Social Institute has a long history of service to the village.

To the right of this page are links to various views, memories and historical accounts related to this long history of the Social Institute.
Extracts from the earliest surviving minute book recording the discussions and reasons for the decisions to build a 'new institute' can be found via the Early Minute Books link.

The Institute's, first home was accommodated in two rooms above the Hinckley Urban District Council's gas showrooms in Wood St. In 1909 the present building was erected, paid for by public subscription, and a mortgage guaranteed by local industrialists, who were the founders and formed the first Management Committee. The building has been a landmark and focal point in the village since that time.
