The Stute

Wood Street in 1918.
Sometimes known locally as Wood End. The stretch of road that is Hinckley Road, Wood Street, the Hollow and the High Street form part of the old Hinckley to Leicester turnpike. There were turnpike gates near to the present Belle Vue Road and at the bottom of Shilton Hill at the other end of the town. The road surface was once much lower than it is today and was deeply rutted from the traffic on the turnpike. People were specially employed to place large stones on the road to be worn in to prevent the road from becoming a quagmire.
