A GOOD TURN FROM THE DOWNTURN. - View the team -
When Caterpillar, which employs around 2000 workers based at Desford, was hit by the world recession, short time working
was imaginatively replaced by a commitment to paying their workers to do voluntary work in the local community. The Caterpillar
Community Action Team, through a scheme run with Voluntary Action Hinckley & Bosworth has been out and about, doing good things
for local charities.
One charity to benefit has been us, the Earl Shilton Social Institute – the ‘Stute’.
For nearly two weeks in March and April, a team of four Caterpillar workers have cleaned, painted and changed parts of the
building, long overdue for repair. No charge for the labour has been made, the real bonus for the ‘Stute’.
"We have been able to complete things that our small voluntary committee have struggled with for some time, thanks to Caterpillar
and their workers. They have worked really hard and have been a pleasure to have here", quotes Julia Pittham the ‘Stute’ Secretary.
"When people came across from Caterpillar to see what the team had achieved, we were able to say and show here on our website, how much this
initiative and the efforts of the team have been appreciated by us".
‘Stute’ members and users have seen and welcomed the improvements.
In these uncertain times for businesses it is heartening to find a big company like Caterpillar, established for 50 years and world
leader in its field, finding ways to use its resources to benefit local people.
